Münster Cornea Bank

In the Cornea Bank of the Department for Ophthalmology, donor corneas of an appropriate quality are obtained for transplantation in accordance with surgical requirements in order to restore vision after an injury, disease or inflammation of the cornea or at least prevent any deterioration.

Who is allowed to donate?

Any deceased individual who during their lifetime had healthy eyes and did not suffer from any communicable disease can be considered as a cornea donor. A cornea donation is always voluntary and not possible against the wishes of an individual stated during his or her lifetime. The Federal Ministry of Health issues free donor cards which make it possible for individuals to confirm their willingness to be a donor while they are still alive.

Retinal Implant/Retinal Prosthesis System

The Retinal Prosthesis System is also known as the Bionic Eye or simply a retinal implant. This is intended for the electrostimulation of the eye for the purposes of providing visual perception in blind people. The retinal implant is used in the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa.
