Special focus

ENDOCRINE SURGERY
We have particular experience in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the endocrine organs (thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, and adrenal gland). Here we use the most tissue-conserving (minimally invasive) techniques possible.
HEPATIC, BILIARY, PANCREATIC SURGERY
A further area of focus of the clinic is the surgical treatment of all benign and malignant diseases, including extended liver, pancreas, and bile duct resections using the latest sealing techniques and intraoperative ultrasound. In addition, for unresectable liver tumours (those which cannot be removed by surgery) we administer thermal treatments of tumours (radio frequency ablation) and carry out procedures to disrupt the blood flow to the tumour tissue (transarterial chemoembolization, TACE) in collaboration with the Institute for Clinical Radiology (Prof. W. Heindel, MD).
GASTRO-INTESTINAL SURGERY
In the surgical clinic we provide surgical treatment on a regular basis for all benign and malignant diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract. Our in-house endoscopic department gives us the possibility to obtain an efficient preoperative and intraoperative diagnosis. The treatment of many benign diseases, e.g. treatment for reflux disease or for diverticula of the intestinal wall, is carried out in particular in a minimally invasive way. Particular expertise can be found in the surgical treatment of chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) and proctologic diseases (haemorrhoids, fistulas, abscesses); the objective of this treatment is the improvement of the quality of life. Many malignant disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract, e.g. oesophageal carcinoma, can be successfully operated on in our clinic by way of pretreatment with chemotherapy or radiation.
TRANSPLANTATION SURGERY
In our clinic we offer the complete range of visceral-surgical transplantation. The main areas of focus in the kidney transplantation programme include the live-donor kidney transplantation and the European Senior Programme for shortening the waiting period for a donor organ. In addition, paediatric kidney transplants are regularly performed in cooperation with the KfH Kidney Centre for Children and Adolescents. In cooperation with the Chair for Transplant Hepatology, the first in Germany, we have expanded our liver transplantation programme. The comprehensive preparation and follow-up treatment for patients undergoing transplantation take place in cooperation with the clinics for internal medicine in regular consultation hours.
TUMOUR SURGERY
Tumour surgery is the centrepiece of our clinic. We offer the entire range of surgery on malignant tumours of the gastro-intestinal tract; the various types of treatment are embedded in multimodal therapeutic concepts that are determined in an interdisciplinary tumour conference which takes place every week. Our clinic also offers the possibility of oncological follow-up treatment and, as a result, of a long-term association with patients.
